You will join a team implementing the UKRI funded research project entitled “Economic prospects, trust and governance in South African townships”.

This is concerned with understanding causal factors explaining variation in livelihood creation within marginalised communities in Eastern and Western Cape Provinces. It entails collaborating with staff at the University of Fort Hare in South Africa, as well as Notre Dame University in the USA, and Bath SDR Ltd. You will report to the PI, Professor James Copestake in the Dept of Social and Policy Sciences.

Integral to the role is travel to South Africa to assist with training research collaborators in use of the Qualitative Impact Protocol (QuIP). While in South Africa you will report to Professor Munacinga Simatele in the Faculty of Management and Commerce.

The post also provides an opportunity to assist with reviewing secondary data and publications relevant to the project, and to collaborate in writing up and publishing research findings. 

As a member of research staff at the AVÊÓƵ, you will be encouraged to take up a minimum of 15 days professional development.

This role is offered on a full time (36.5 hours per week) fixed term basis with an expected duration of 18 months. 

AVÊÓƵ you 

You will have:

  • A doctoral qualification in a relevant field of the social sciences.
  • Experience of living and working in low or middle income countries, ideally South Africa.
  • Specialist knowledge of international development relevant to the research project.
  • Experience and understanding of relevant qualitative social science-based research methods, ideally including use of the Qualitative Impact Protocol (QuIP) and/or participatory methods.
  • Demonstrated potential to publish in high quality peer reviewed journals.
  • The skills required to plan, execute and disseminate original social science-based research.
  • Commitment to excellent, collaborative and culturally-sensitive research.
