Additional benefits:

• A generous Personal Development budget and time allowance

• Potential to fast-track a career in industry

• Access to mentoring sessions through Innovate UK Business Connect

It is essential that you understand how KTP works with business and the University and the vital role you will play

Any questions about this role email partnerships@bath.ac.uk

<![CDATA[Research Associate (fixed-term) (ED12072)]]> /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=ED12072 /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=ED12072 AV视频 the role

We are looking for an adventurous and talented researcher to fill a postdoctoral position as part of the £7.3M EPSRC Programme Grant, MaThRad (Mathematical Theory of Radiation Transport).

This five-year interdisciplinary programme of research will use modern mathematical methods from probability theory, advanced Monte Carlo methods and inverse problems to develop novel approaches to the theory and application of radiation transport.

The programme grant is held jointly between the University of Warwick, AV视频, University of Cambridge, University College Hospital, and the National Physical Laboratory. This position will be based at the AV视频.

Nuclear technology is based around the principle of how radiation particles interact with materials.

Whilst the microscopic behaviour of such systems is well understood, the degree of inhomogeneity involved means that the ability to predict the flux of particles through complex physical environments on the macroscopic (human) scale is a significant challenge.

This lies at the heart of how we design, regulate and operate some of the most important technologies for the twenty-first century. These include:

  • building new reactors (fission and fusion) and de-commissioning old ones,
  • medical radiation therapy
  • establishing novel space technologies through e.g. the development of space-bound mini-reactors for off-world bases and protection for high-tech equipment exposed to high-energy radiation such as satellites and spacesuits.
  • accurate prediction of how radiation interacts with surrounding matter is based on modelling through the Boltzmann transport equation.

MaThRad is pursuing an interactive exploration of foundational, translational and application-driven research; developing predictive mathematical models with quantifiable accuracy and software prototypes, ready for real-world implementation in the energy, health care and space exploration nuclear industries.

As a member of Research Staff at the AV视频, you will be encouraged to take up a minimum of 10 days professional development pro rata per year

AV视频 you

The successful candidate will work with to improve our theoretical understanding of current Monte Carlo algorithms used in a range of applications relating to Radiation Transport, and to develop novel methods which can improve the methods used by our academic and industrial partners.

Experience of conducting high quality research on interacting particle systems or rare event simulation will be highly desirable.

Willingness to explore the interaction with ad-hoc and interdisciplinary approaches is highly desirable.

No prior knowledge of the application area is expected, however a willingness to engage with applications is essential, as well as to collaborate with scientists who are not mathematicians.

  • You will conduct individual and collaborative research of high quality in an appropriate area of mathematics and/or statistics and its applications in Monte Carlo methods for radiation transport modelling.
  • You will continually update your knowledge and understanding in the wider area of the project to inform research activity.
  • You will publish in high quality peer reviewed journals appropriate to the discipline.
  • You will disseminate the research at national and international conferences, e.g. by presentations.
  • You will be involved in regular contact with industrial partners in the energy, space, and healthcare sectors.
  • You will assist the Principal Investigator and Co-Investigators with project management: e.g. organising meetings and corresponding/discussing with partners.
  • You will identify sources of funding and contribute to securing funds for project related research.
  • You will develop research objectives and proposals that support the MaThRad agenda for your own or joint research, with assistance of a mentor if required.

You will from time to time be required to undertake other duties of a similar nature commensurate with the grade of appointment as reasonably required by your line manager.

Additional information

Please submit a CV and a cover letter, indicating how your experience aligns with the project, and outlining any other relevant experience of researching in group or interdisciplinary settings.

Note that we currently operated an anonymous shortlisting stage. You should answer the shortlisting questions anonymously, and also attach a CV and cover letter, which will be considered following anonymous shortlisting.

<![CDATA[Research Associate - Ionospheric Radio Propagation (FM12162)]]> /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=FM12162 /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=FM12162 AV视频 the role

We are seeking Research Associates to study large-to-small scale ionospheric irregularities by utilising new evidence from EISCAT_3D together with evidence from any other relevant datasets as well as to model and characterise propagation disturbances induced by ionospheric irregularities on radio signals (for example, satellites and radio objects).

The NERC-funded FINESSE project will exploit a new and unique (also NERC-funded) incoherent scatter radar system, EISCAT_3D, located in northern Scandinavia and capable of 3D imaging of the ionosphere.

The UK along with the rest of the world is becoming increasingly dependent on technological systems, such as satellite telecommunications and satellite navigation, that are at risk from adverse space weather conditions. This risk manifests through plasma instabilities in the ionosphere which originate electron density irregularities that induce propagation disturbances on radio signals such as from GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems).

One of the main objectives of the FINESSE project is to determine the origin of large-to-small scale ionospheric irregularities, to understand how this leads to scintillation of radio signals at various frequencies, and how this impacts applications.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • studying large-to-small scale irregularities and to model their propagation disturbances (i.e., scintillation, temporal TEC fluctuations);
  • studying the impact of ionospheric propagation disturbances on applications and how EISCAT_3D could be utilised in space weather alerts;
  • conducting individual and collaborative research within this project;
  • contributing to the execution of the project;
  • analysing data from EISCAT_3D, ground and spaceborne GNSS, KAIRA, scintillation monitors, ionosondes, incoherent scatter radars and other instruments of relevance;
  • disseminating project results (by means of project reports, peer-reviewed publications);
  • actively participating in project meetings as well as Departmental and Group meetings;

Within this role you will work in a dynamic environment whilst building your research profile in space weather science. You will be supported to travel to meetings and to share your research with the wider community as opportunities arise throughout the project.

There are two positions available, both full time, fixed term from 1st April 2025 to 31st March 2026.

AV视频 you

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • a PhD or equivalent in GNSS, space physics, space engineering, or any other area closely related to the project;
  • familiarity with GNSS data;
  • familiarity with ionospheric radio science (for example, incoherent scatter radars, propagation effects due to TEC and scintillation);
  • ability to carry out research work and to disseminate results;
  • ability to work in a team;
  • passion and self-motivation

A lower grade offer may be made (Grade 6) with comparable reduction in responsibilities and amendment in job title to Research Assistant, if a suitable applicant cannot be found to fill the Grade 7 position. Applicants will need to be within six months of their course completion date and will be promoted to Research Associate once their PhD has been awarded.
